Arise and Walk in the Light
Vuka means "wake up" and "arise." That is not a slogan for us, it is our calling. We exist to wake a sleeping world to the living God, and to walk together in the light of Jesus Christ.
for what makes everything visible is light. Therefore it is said: Get up, sleeper, and rise up from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.
Ephesians 5:14 (CSB)
Why We Are Called Vuka
Think of dawn. The sun has not yet broken the horizon, but the light is already growing. The birds wake and begin to sing, the chill of the night gives way to warmth, and the whole day opens up, full of possibility. Vuka is named for a moment like that. Not the start of a new day only, but the start of a new life.
Vuka means arise, wake, rise up. It carries the call to new life that runs all through John's Gospel, and it sounds in Paul's words above. So we hold three words together as our heartbeat:
Wake up. Get up. And walk.
Vuka. Sukuma. uHamba.
Welcome to a new day. Welcome to a new life. Welcome to community.
Our Mission
Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.
So we exist to worship God, proclaim the gospel, make disciples, build up the body of Christ, and serve our community with Christ's love, all while joyfully delighting in God's presence. That last part matters. We are not after duty without delight. We believe that in God's presence is where real life is found, and we want everyone who comes near Vuka to encounter Him there.
Our Heart
People who visit us often say the same thing: "You really enjoy God here, and you enjoy one another." That captures us well.
We are serious about Scripture; and sound in doctrine, and we are deeply joyful, celebratory, and satisfied in God. Those two things are not in tension. The more clearly we see who God is, the more there is to enjoy. We want to be a church that is both grounded in truth and glad in heart, a family where people are known, loved, and free to grow.
A Missional Family
We want to be a missional church, not merely a church that runs missions. The difference is this: an encounter with God changes people, and we cannot manufacture that in anyone. What we can do is live it, demonstrate it, and build real relationships that introduce people to the God who is already at work.
That is why so much of our life happens around tables and in friendships, not only in rows on a Sunday. We grow together, serve together, and invite others in as we go.
Where We Are Going
We are a young, growing church. Some of the ministries that carry this vision are already up and running, and others we are building toward.
Already running:
- Barbershop, our men's ministry, where men are sharpened and called to lead well
- Arise, our women's ministry, where women are built up in Christ and encouraged to flourish in their God-given calling
- Wrestle, our theology sessions, where honest questions about faith are taken seriously
Building toward:
- ROAR, the annual men's conference calling men to rise and take responsibility under God
- The Marriage Course, a practical course for couples, helping them build something that lasts whether newly engaged or decades in
As the family grows, so will the ways we disciple, serve our city, and reach the world. The direction never changes: people awakened by God, walking in the light, together.
